Rational: The purpose of this assessment is to help you develop the skills of reflecting on the challenges which face the hospitality industry, Reflective skills are an important workplace and personal skill and contribute to the development of ongoing professional skills and expertise.
Task: You are asked to make five 200 word entries that reflect on each of the topics listed below. You may write in the First Person (using I) and should include at least one reference to the weekly readings or something you have read elsewhere which you consider relevant. It is recommended that you submit these fortnightly starting from week 3, with the final submission due in week 12. Here are the topics to write about in your five reflections:
Choose a scholarly article on ecotourism and its relationship with sustainability. Briefly summarise the content and point of view. Then write if you agree or disagree and why.
Watch a video that examines the effects of mass tourism on sustainability. Write a short commentary on the strength of the claims it makes.
Review your last dining out experience and reflect on how sustainable it was and why. Consider sustainability from an economic, social and environmental perspective. Refer to the weekly readings in your analysis.
Identify a recent instance of where a hospitality or tourism entity was in the news for the wrong reasons. Reflect on why this was a failure of their Corporate Social Responsibility
Identify a hotel website that promotes its sustainability credentials and analyse its claims. Notes: Keep your writing succinct and to the word count. You may use the first person as these are your personal reflections. One reference only per reflection. Journal to be uploaded to Turnitin
